Wastewater Based Epidemiology

Rapid Multi-target Concentration for Improved Assay Sensitivity

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has become a critical tool in monitoring public health by providing early detection of infectious diseases and other health-related threats. Our technology enables rapid and efficient concentration of viral particles, pathogens, and biomarkers from wastewater samples, delivering actionable data for public health officials. By integrating advanced concentration methods with sensitive downstream analysis, our solutions empower communities to respond swiftly to emerging health threats, ensuring a safer and healthier population.

applications & uses

Scientific Information
The data confirmed the method’s effectiveness of this method for both avian and human strains of the virus and highlighted its potential for early detection. By monitoring disease pathogens in wastewater, researchers can glean insights into the circulation and transmission dynamics of these viruses in both animal and human populations.
Scientific Information
“Innovaprep ultrafiltration (following solids removal) had the highest sequencing sensitivity and richness, resulting in the successful assembly of most near-complete human virus genomes.”
Scientific Information

InnovaPrep's concentration enabled PCR and sequencing technology to detect the first case of the Omicron variant arriving in Australia from an airliner tank sample demonstrating that surveillance of aircraft wastewater samples provides valuable information regarding the global spread of emerging variants of concern.

what sets us apart

validated methods

Used by Public Health Labs and utilities in validated and regulatory approved methods.

multi-target concentration

Capture multiple target organisms from large volumes.

speed

Enables rapid, same-day results, same shift.

Colorado State University has been processing wastewater samples collected from manholes on campus and from treatment plants around the state of Colorado since August2020. We have run thousands of samples through our InnovaPrep concentrator – up to 40 samples a day – generating valuable data which is posted to a public dashboard for the citizens of Colorado to see. The InnovaPrep was recommended to us by Hampton Roads Sanitation District, who were among the first to test wastewater for COVID19.  After reviewing other protocols which seemed lengthier and more laborious, we were delighted to have the InnovaPrep as an option. We have been extremely happy with our concentrator – it’s reliable, rapid and easy to use, requires little maintenance and allows us to safely perform all manipulations of wastewater inside a biosafety cabinet, minimizing exposure to pathogens. Even inexperienced lab staff are able to safely and reliably concentrate wastewater using this instrument as it has a very user-friendly interface which guides the user through each step. We also note that InnovaPrep is a reliable supplier – we have never experienced delays due to items being out of stock -and the technical support is outstanding

FluidPrep™ CPT - Unirradiated

Single-use, Unirradiated, Concentrating Pipette Tips (CPTs) are available in a variety of formats. Selecting the ideal CPT for use with the FluidPrep Concentrating Pipette System is crucial to achieving optimal performance - both in terms of speed and concentration factor of your target.

Selecting the Right CPT - Factors to consider

1 - Pore Size based on Nature and Size of Target Particle

CPTs are available in four pore sizes – Ultra, 0.05um, 0.2um and 0.45um to accommodate the wide range of target particle types and sizes.

*Volume and flow rates will vary by matrix and selected menu settings

2 - Surface Area by Sample Matrix and Sample Volume

The complexity of your sample and overall volume to be processed will influence the speed and overall volume that can be processed effectively. Two options area available.

  • Standard CPTs Membrane surface area is 98 cm²nominal. Recommended for sample volumes over 200 mL and/or more complex or turbid matrices.
  • Mini 25 CPTs  - The membrane surface area is 25 cm²nominal and capable of smaller elution volumes with optimized menu settings. Recommended for sample volumes 200 mL or less and of low complexity/turbidity. Short-walled sample containers and the CP Sample Carousel are required for use.

As a general Rule of Thumb, we recommend using the smallest tip that provides the desired concentration factor for your application.

3 - Packaging Format by Target Application

All products are produced aseptically in a cleanroom environment. Understanding your downstream application will help identify which package format is best suited.

  • Non-irradiated CPTs -Bulk packaged and suitable for most applications due to the inherent low background.  Recommended if target organisms are non-ubiquitous or using selective assays.
  • Irradiated CPTs  - Individually wrapped and irradiated to provide added protection against bioburden. Best for culture-based downstream applications.

Tips are designed for use with the CP Select (sold separately)

We recommend use with the CP sample carousel item #HC08042, and our selection of short-walled sample containers, Sample Cup Flip-Top 200ml item #HC08040-10, Sample Vial Flip-Top 10ml item # HC08041-10, and Sample Cup with Conical Bottom item #AC08106-10.
