Industrial Process Fluid Microbial Monitoring

Concentrate Bacteria, Yeast, Fungi, and Particle-Associated Microorganisms from Industrial Process Fluids

Industrial process fluids can harbor bacteria, yeast, fungi, biofilm-associated microorganisms, and corrosion-associated microbes that impact product quality, equipment performance, operational efficiency, and process reliability. Monitoring these systems can be challenging due to oils, surfactants, dissolved solids, corrosion products, suspended particles, foam, and other matrix components that may interfere with analysis.

The CP Select™ enables concentration of microorganisms and particle-associated targets from larger sample volumes into a small, analysis-ready volume for downstream testing.

Applicable sample types include:

  • Metalworking fluids
  • Process baths
  • Parts washer fluids
  • Industrial detergent solutions
  • Cooling water systems
  • Utility water systems
  • Oil and gas production fluids
  • Recycled process water
  • Other industrial liquid matrices

Why Concentrate Before Analysis?

Microorganisms within industrial fluids may be present at low abundance or associated with particles, biofilm fragments, corrosion products, and oil-water interfaces. Concentrating larger sample volumes prior to analysis can improve detection sensitivity while supporting a broad range of downstream microbiological and molecular methods.

Rather than replacing existing analytical workflows, the CP Select™ is designed to integrate upstream of established methods, providing a concentrated sample for further analysis.

Application Scope

Industrial process fluids vary significantly in composition and may contain microorganisms in both the liquid phase and associated with particulate matter. Effective workflow development therefore requires consideration of both the target organism and the sample matrix.

This workflow approach may be used to support evaluation of:

  • Bacteria, yeast and fungi
  • Bacterial spores
  • Corrosion-associated microorganisms (MIC bacteria)
  • Biofilm-associated microorganisms
  • Low-abundance microbial contaminants
  • Microbial communities evaluated by molecular methods

The CP Select™ may be integrated with culture-based methods, ATP assays, flow cytometry, qPCR, ddPCR, sequencing, metagenomics, and other microbiological workflows.

Supported Analytical Methods

Concentrated samples may be evaluated using a wide range of analytical approaches, including:

  • Aerobic plate count methods
  • Heterotrophic plate count methods
  • Yeast and mold culture
  • Selective culture methods
  • ATP assays
  • Flow cytometry
  • qPCR and ddPCR
  • Sequencing and metagenomics
  • Other microbiological and molecular workflows

Industrial Application Example: MIC Bacteria in Oil & Gas Production Brines

InnovaPrep has demonstrated concentration of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) bacteria from challenging oil and gas production brines using CP Select™ technology. These complex industrial fluids contain dissolved solids, particulates, and other matrix components that can complicate microbial analysis.

This application demonstrates the ability of the CP Select™ platform to support microbial concentration from difficult industrial liquid matrices while maintaining compatibility with downstream microbiological workflows.
