Select the Right Consumables for Your Sample Preparation Workflow
The FluidPrep™ CP Select™ platform supports a wide range of sample preparation workflows through the use of Concentration Tips (CPTs), CPT Matrix Prefilters, Upstream Clarification Filters, and Elution Fluids.
Different samples present different challenges. Some samples can be processed directly using a Concentration Tip, while others may benefit from clarification to improve processability, reduce fouling, increase throughput, or support downstream analysis.
This guide provides an overview of the primary concentration and clarification consumables available for CP Select workflows.

Concentration Tips (CPTs)
Concentration Tips are the primary consumable used during CP Select processing. The CPT retains target material during concentration and works together with patented Wet Foam Elution™ technology to produce a small-volume analysis-ready sample.
Available CPT families include:
- Ultra CPT
- 0.05 µm CPT
- 0.2 µm CPT
- 0.45 µm CPT
- Mini 25 CPTs
Selection depends on the target, sample matrix, workflow objectives, and downstream analytical method.
Clarification Options
Not all samples require clarification.
However, samples containing debris, fibers, sediment, suspended solids, aggregates, or other matrix material may benefit from clarification before or during concentration.
Clarification approaches can range from settling, screening, filtration, or centrifugation to workflow-specific consumables designed for use with the CP Select platform.
InnovaPrep offers two clarification product families specifically designed to support CP Select workflows.
Upstream Clarification Filters
Upstream Clarification Filters are used before concentration begins.
These products help reduce matrix material before the sample enters the CP Select workflow and may be useful when processing samples containing coarse debris, sediment, fibers, or persistent suspended particulates.
Available options include:
100 µm Mesh Upstream Clarification Filter
Designed to remove larger debris and coarse particulates.
1 µm Upstream Clarification Filter
Designed to reduce fine particulates and suspended material before concentration.
Best suited for workflows where clarification is performed as a separate step before concentration.

CPT Matrix Prefilters
CPT Matrix Prefilters attach directly upstream of a Concentration Tip and function during active CP Select processing.
Unlike Upstream Clarification Filters, CPT Matrix Prefilters provide simultaneous clarification and concentration within a single workflow.
Available pore sizes include:
- 1 µm
- 8 µm
- 25 µm
- 75 µm
Potential benefits may include:
- Improved processability
- Reduced fouling
- Increased throughput
- Improved handling of challenging matrices
Important
CPT Matrix Prefilters must be removed before Wet Foam Elution™ is performed.

Elution Fluids
Following concentration, retained material is recovered using patented Wet Foam Elution™ technology.
Available Elution Fluids include:
- PBS
- PBS-X
- Tris
- DMEM
Additional formulations may be available depending on workflow requirements.

Understanding the Workflow
The FluidPrep™ CP Select™ platform supports a wide range of sample preparation workflows through the use of Concentration Tips (CPTs), CPT Matrix Prefilters, Upstream Clarification Filters, and Elution Fluids.
Different consumables serve different functions within a workflow. Depending on the sample, target, matrix characteristics, and analytical objectives, users may employ concentration alone or incorporate clarification steps before or during concentration.
Not all samples require clarification. Some samples can be processed directly using a Concentration Tip, while others may benefit from additional matrix management to improve processability, reduce fouling, increase throughput, or support downstream analytical performance.
Understanding the role of each consumable category helps users select appropriate tools for their specific application and workflow objectives.
Step 1: Select a Concentration Tip (CPT)
Concentration Tips are the primary consumable used during CP Select processing.
The CPT retains target material during concentration and works together with Wet Foam Elution™ recovery to produce a small-volume analysis-ready sample.
Standard CPTs
Standard CPTs provide approximately 98 cm² of membrane surface area and are typically used for larger sample volumes and more challenging matrices.
Available options include:
- Ultra CPT
- 0.05 µm CPT
- 0.2 µm CPT
- 0.45 µm CPT
Mini 25 CPTs
Mini 25 CPTs provide approximately 25 cm² of membrane surface area and are generally used for:
- Smaller sample volumes
- Lower-solids samples
- AirPrep™ eluates
- Low-turbidity waters
- Other lower-complexity matrices

Step 2: Determine Whether Clarification Is Needed
Samples containing debris, fibers, solids, aggregates, colloids, or other matrix material may benefit from clarification.
Clarification may help:
- Improve processability
- Reduce fouling
- Increase throughput
- Improve workflow consistency
- Support downstream analytical performance
The appropriate clarification approach depends on the sample matrix, target of interest, solids content, processability requirements, and downstream analytical method.
Numerous clarification approaches may be appropriate depending on the application, including:
- Settling
- Screening
- Sieving
- Mesh filtration
- Bag filtration
- Cartridge filtration
- Centrifugation
- Upstream Clarification Filters
- CPT Matrix Prefilters
The following products are designed specifically for integration with CP Select workflows.
Upstream Clarification Filters
Upstream Clarification Filters are used before concentration begins.
These products reduce matrix material before the sample enters the CP Select workflow.
Available Options
100 µm Mesh Upstream Clarification Filter
Designed to remove larger debris and coarse particulates.
Common examples include:
- Plant material
- Fibers
- Sediment
- Gross solids
1 µm Upstream Clarification Filter
Designed to reduce persistent fine particulates and suspended material.
May be useful when processing samples containing:
- Fine solids
- High turbidity
- Persistent suspended particulates

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a CPT Matrix Prefilter and an Upstream Clarification Filter?
Upstream Clarification Filters are used before concentration begins to reduce matrix material before the sample enters the CP Select workflow.
CPT Matrix Prefilters attach directly to a Concentration Tip and function during active sample concentration.
Do all samples require clarification?
No. Many samples can be processed directly using a Concentration Tip without clarification.
Clarification is typically considered when samples contain debris, solids, fibers, aggregates, or other matrix material that may affect processability.
Can CPT Matrix Prefilters be used with all Concentration Tips?
Yes, CPT Matrix Prefilters are designed for use with compatible CP Select Concentration Tips. Refer to current product documentation for compatibility information.
What Elution Fluid should I use?
