The Bobcat sampler was used to effectively collect enteric pathogenic bioaerosols near open wastewater canals in urban cities with poor sanitation, highlighting the risks associated with these water sources. The results highlight the need for robust monitoring and mitigation strategies to protect public health.
The Bobcat sampler collected pathogenic bioaerosols near wastewater-affected waterways. The filters were eluted using its Rapid Filter Elution Kit and extracted for analysis. Aerosol concentrations of 12 bacterial and viral species were detected. Analysis using a viable impactor revealed that many detected bacteria were in a vegetative state.
In two cities, norovirus GI and GII were the most prevalent viral strains. Additionally, enteric bacteria, such as E. coli and Salmonella spp., were detected and quantified which were not previously observed in extramural urban aerosols.
